Were back on the Lady Lawyer League podcast. I’ve been waiting to say that for like three years. So on today’s episode, we’re talking about what it means to be back on the podcast, what we’re going to talk about coming up, and why you should subscribe and like and follow and let us know what you want to talk about in the future.

00:00:22:16 – 00:00:34:22
Unknown
This is the Lady Lawyer League podcast, Omaha’s leading lady lawyers empowering women to be legal savvy. Hosted by Susan Beth and Tracy Hightower. Henny of Hightower. Rupp. Law.

00:00:35:00 – 00:00:38:17
Unknown
Hey. Guess what? Susan. What? We’re back.

00:00:38:18 – 00:00:45:22
Unknown
Oh, wait. Are we starting? Oh, it’s recording the whole time. So they call that be real.

00:00:46:04 – 00:00:49:05
Unknown
Roll, roll.

00:00:49:07 – 00:01:03:19
Unknown
Be real is like. Yeah, but you actually meant B-roll. Yeah. Oh, l l Jesus.

00:01:03:21 – 00:01:08:02
Unknown
You ready for this today? Well, we’re doing it.

00:01:08:04 – 00:01:19:10
Unknown
Are you? Yeah. We’re back. Charlie horse right now. What do you need to do about it? Does it happen to you in the middle of the night? Sometimes.

00:01:19:12 – 00:01:32:16
Unknown
Oh, yeah. I’m so old. Are you in glute work that gets you a Charlie horse? Oh, that’s the glute work. Were you, like, squeezing your brat cheeks in trial? Yes. Okay. That’s good. Okay,

00:01:32:19 – 00:01:36:06
Unknown
so we’re supposed to talk about how we’re back? Yep.

00:01:36:08 – 00:01:40:06
Unknown
We have an outline, but we’re just going to banter.

00:01:40:08 – 00:01:42:03
Unknown
And it’s been three years.

00:01:42:08 – 00:01:51:20
Unknown
It feels like way longer. Way more longer. It does. It doesn’t mean, oh, really feels like we’re just in a new space. We are in a new space.

00:01:51:22 – 00:01:58:20
Unknown
Let’s talk about that. Okay. Check out the space. Because if you’re not watching on video, you should be watching on video.

00:01:58:22 – 00:02:06:03
Unknown
The cool part about this new space is we don’t have to drive to it. Yes. In the offices of High tech.

00:02:06:05 – 00:02:25:04
Unknown
Yes. That’s pretty cool. It’s very cool. When we first started the podcast at the very beginning, we did it in our conference room, but it wasn’t on video, and we had our headset and we initially were wearing masks because of Covid and we were like, oh yes, the very first episode.

00:02:25:04 – 00:02:49:04
Unknown
And then we were like, we don’t, I don’t even have. Well, no, we started more than three years ago. We stopped three years ago. So I think we probably started right in the middle of Covid. Yeah, maybe he didn’t want us to get saliva on the mix. Oh, yeah, we had the headsets. Like the football headsets. We don’t have that anymore.

00:02:49:06 – 00:03:06:06
Unknown
That doesn’t work. Oh, there’s table noise. I have to not. You hear that? That’s table noise. Okay. All right. Our official HR law podcast. Space lady lawyer lead podcast. Yeah.

00:03:06:08 – 00:03:14:11
Unknown
And we didn’t change the name. Lady Lawyer League was the best is the best ever podcast name.

00:03:14:13 – 00:03:33:15
Unknown
Oh, yeah. Lady lawyer league. I thought you were going to say LLC or something, but because that’s what lawyers would think. Could we make our podcast in LLC? Why would we listen? I don’t know. All right, all right. So we’re back. Why? Why are we back?

00:03:33:17 – 00:03:55:03
Unknown
well, our new space right now is on the second floor of our building. And since three years ago, we grew and needed more office space, which is why we have space for a podcast also. Right. And we are in two stories of the building. Yes. I mean, we’re like the big law firms that are downtown like that take up ten floors of the Woodmen Tower.

00:03:55:04 – 00:04:30:21
Unknown
We’re getting there, right? Maybe someday. But also, growth wise, we have ten attorneys and we are all female attorneys, so Lady Lawyer League fits really well. Another thing growth was that I was thinking about this new sense of the podcast as we were doing a lot more estate planning with Will express. Yeah. Nobody else is doing anything like that where we are offering a reduced fee estate plan that can be done very quickly.

00:04:31:00 – 00:05:00:01
Unknown
Yeah. I think the really cool thing about our estate planning department is that Tasha really believes that people don’t need to have an estate to have a plan. And I think we see that in practice a lot, too, that they don’t need to have one, or that people think they need to have one. Well, both. But also like having an estate plan, even when you don’t have a whole bunch of things ands up really helping in the court world.

00:05:00:03 – 00:05:20:06
Unknown
I was talking to someone the other day who wants to do their estate plan for one reason only, and he said to me, you’re going to think I’m crazy, but I only want to do it because I have dogs. And I said, I don’t think you’re crazy at all. No. Let’s remind, let’s remind the listeners that Susan gets my cats when I die.

00:05:20:06 – 00:05:37:10
Unknown
And that is in my estate plan. We talked about that on the podcast, maybe before. Yeah, yeah, we should do a quiz to see what people remember from past podcast recordings. Well, I would lose because I couldn’t even remember our last podcast.

00:05:37:12 – 00:06:01:01
Unknown
But I don’t think I don’t think a lot of things that our clients tell us are actually crazy. And they do think that we might think it’s crazy. Do you think that’s because we’re, like, desensitized to crazy or because we’re really open minded, caring people? Okay, well, now that you added the second one, I think both, but I really think we are very desensitized.

00:06:01:06 – 00:06:19:16
Unknown
Yes. Which is fun because in social settings, you get to sort of tell a little story about a client that’s not even one of the crazy stories. And people are like, whoa, that’s crazy, right? And I’m like, wait, wait, I got way crazier stories or people will be telling you something about their life. And you’re like in your head thinking, no.

00:06:19:18 – 00:06:49:03
Unknown
Yeah, that’s not that bad. Right. Or people tell me stories and I’m like, oh, you should probably get divorced. Yeah, yeah. I haven’t had any cocktail party moments lately. I feel like that was happening a lot more. You know, the cocktail party thing, like where people find out you’re an attorney and they want to tell you about their case, and you’re like, I don’t know anything about IRS lawsuits or whatever it is, but they’re like, but let me tell you.

00:06:49:03 – 00:07:14:20
Unknown
And then they talk about it and you’re like, again, no, nothing. Right. Because all lawyers don’t know everything about everything, right? Just the same with doctors. All doctors don’t know everything about everything about your body. They specialize in one area of your body. Like when you go to your doctor for, I don’t know, let’s say a word. Removal.

00:07:14:21 – 00:07:36:10
Unknown
Are you going to talk about your blood pressure? I don’t know. Well, they might take your blood pressure, but if you go for a walk removal, are you going to talk about your heart rate? Maybe not. But the legal world is completely different, right? Yeah. I thought you were going to talk about the cocktail parties where people want the free legal advice.

00:07:36:12 – 00:07:52:06
Unknown
Yes. And and I think they want to tell you the story about their case that we know nothing about that area law. Hoping that we’ll tell them will justify how they feel. Yeah. Because they’re going to be like, oh, I’m so stressed out or, you know, what do you think? Do you think my lawyer is doing a good job?

00:07:52:08 – 00:08:16:03
Unknown
Yeah. Like I can’t answer that. Yeah. People who are, you know, they want to talk about their divorce, right? Or their custody case, and they’re like, nope, not talking about that. I’m trying to have a good time. Yeah. And then you want to get far away from that person at the party, or sometimes just go home? Yes. My bad at exiting from those types of things that I don’t want to have anymore either.

00:08:16:04 – 00:08:34:02
Unknown
Oh, yeah. You should. You should get better at that. No, I, I probably just kind of. I think, though, that it’s okay to just literally in life be like, okay, I’m going to go over or buy or nice talking to you and then just walk away like people do that to you. Well, I do that, but I feel like it’s rude.

00:08:34:03 – 00:08:54:12
Unknown
Oh, well, they’re being rude to you. Okay. Tip for tat. Yeah. My mom just told me last night I gave your phone number to so-and-so because she has a legal question, and I said, oh, I love giving free legal advice. Mom. Thank you. So she get my cell phone number to this person to have they reached out? Not well, not yet.

00:08:54:12 – 00:09:14:21
Unknown
Or if they called, I didn’t answer because I don’t usually answer if I don’t. Number issue was no. And she goes, well you might have to refer it out. And I was like, oh, even better. Then you should just give the front desk phone, right? Because they’re very good at referring things out. Yeah. Yeah. Debbie. Debbie. We should have Debbie on the podcast.

00:09:14:22 – 00:09:36:19
Unknown
Oh, my. We’d have to edit a lot out because she swears. No, because she’ll say things that are embarrassing about me. Oh, so put Debbie and Susan on the schedule together and not have Tracy there. When Tracy’s not here. We’ll have Debbie, and then we’ll do Tracy’s dad and Tracy’s brother. And we can have it be like a series.

00:09:36:22 – 00:09:58:03
Unknown
Oh, but the behind the scenes. What was Tracy like when she was first? So we can have your brother on. Oh, yeah. I had a funny dream about my brother last night. Oh, so I’m going to see him next weekend. I had a dream he was wearing this really cool dress and these, like, crazy boots. And we were going to a goth party.

00:09:58:04 – 00:10:23:17
Unknown
How old was he wearing the dress? Oh. That’s fun. Yeah. Okay. Did you tell him about it yet? No. Not yet. You will. And he’s gonna be like, that’s a really great idea. You should find him address that. Looks like that. And be like, here. Here it is. Put it on. So I think it’s because my husband or my stepsisters dress in a picture, and my brother was there, obviously.

00:10:23:17 – 00:10:42:11
Unknown
And this picture circles around all the time amongst our family to like, poke fun at my husband. And so I like translated into my head that it was my brother. Oh, I should go to therapy for that, shouldn’t I? No, I don’t think just that. Oh, but I think dreams are interesting. I had a dream last night.

00:10:42:13 – 00:11:04:13
Unknown
Oh, yeah? You’re making a lot of noise. What do you have in your cup? Water. Oh. Ice water. I’ve Diet Coke in my coffee mug because I was having a branded mug. Brandon. Branded? Branded. Those are nice. I get a lot of compliments on those ones, and people really enjoy them. Okay. Tell me about your dream or your.

00:11:04:15 – 00:11:26:05
Unknown
Oh, I had a I don’t remember a lot of my dreams. Like, people are like, you should journal about your dreams. And I’m like, how do you do that? Immediately wake up in the middle of the night, start writing about it because I don’t remember. So the ones I do remember, I feel are important. But I was in Spain and I lost my phone, and somehow I was able to see on the find a Friend tracker where it was going.

00:11:26:05 – 00:11:48:05
Unknown
So then I was trying to get to it and then I couldn’t catch up to it. Someone stole it. I think that’s a dream about anxiety. Oh, because you’re. And we all freak out when we lose our phones, right? Right. And then that you couldn’t find it and you were chasing it. Yeah. Like you’re chasing something. Maybe. Yeah.

00:11:48:06 – 00:12:04:14
Unknown
I remember my dreams all the time. They are freaking crazy. I think it’s because I started taking a medication that I take written for bed. That is actually supposed to help you sleep, but it’s not a sleep medication. That’s just like they say, take it before bed because it could make you tired. And

00:12:04:16 – 00:12:08:13
Unknown
my dreams are insane. In sane.

00:12:08:15 – 00:12:13:02
Unknown
Like fun. Insane. So, do you want an example? Yeah. Okay, so in one of them,

00:12:13:03 – 00:12:14:13
Unknown
I’m walking down the street

00:12:14:15 – 00:12:20:16
Unknown
in Fargo where I grew up. My, you know, like a neighborhood street that I was familiar with.

00:12:20:18 – 00:12:26:01
Unknown
And I walked past this big, huge two story house which is painted bright pink,

00:12:26:05 – 00:12:27:07
Unknown
and

00:12:27:10 – 00:12:36:04
Unknown
it is full of water. You can see it through the big windows, and there’s koala bears, cartoon qualifiers trying to get out

00:12:36:06 – 00:12:38:02
Unknown
of the windows because of the water.

00:12:38:02 – 00:12:39:01
Unknown
And

00:12:39:04 – 00:12:40:13
Unknown
there’s elephants on the roof.

00:12:40:13 – 00:12:41:09
Unknown
Oh my God.

00:12:41:09 – 00:12:46:04
Unknown
And the elephants are putting their trunks into the windows and trying to suck the water out and spray

00:12:46:06 – 00:12:48:17
Unknown
it. And

00:12:48:19 – 00:12:50:05
Unknown
there’s

00:12:50:07 – 00:12:51:07
Unknown
like

00:12:51:09 – 00:12:54:17
Unknown
A5K or something going by on this street

00:12:54:19 – 00:12:57:11
Unknown
of old, naked people. Wow.

00:12:57:13 – 00:12:59:12
Unknown
All of that in one dream.

00:12:59:14 – 00:13:01:22
Unknown
That’s a lot to interpret.

00:13:02:00 – 00:13:04:08
Unknown
Do you have to write them down or you remember all this?

00:13:04:09 – 00:13:27:17
Unknown
Wow. Yeah, that’s really crazy, isn’t it? I don’t even know where to begin. I was really in my dream. I. I remember my feelings were that I was very concerned for the safety of the koala bears. And the elephants were helping. Yes, they were helpful. That was nice of them. But this happens every night. Yes. Wow. You should write a book.

00:13:27:17 – 00:13:33:17
Unknown
I think it’s interesting to talk about what’s different in the legal world now.

00:13:33:19 – 00:13:48:14
Unknown
You know, we’ve taken a big enough break that we can talk about. Are there different things that are happening from three years ago, both just like logistically in court and then also like with our clients cases?

00:13:48:15 – 00:14:16:13
Unknown
Yeah, I think logistically more and more of our court hearings are happening electronically. I think that was happening three years ago, but now it’s like more commonplace and it’s easier to navigate. And now it’s not just because of Covid, like everyone’s learned it because of Covid, but now it’s just out of convenience. And a lot of our judges are using exhibits instead of paper.

00:14:16:13 – 00:14:27:10
Unknown
They’re using electronic versions. But that’s still kind of like half and half maybe of our drivers. Right? I.

00:14:27:12 – 00:14:28:05
Unknown
I

00:14:28:07 – 00:14:43:11
Unknown
have a love hate relationship with like zoom hearings. I like the idea of going to court, but I also like the idea of not having to, like, drive there and park and all of that. I think going into the courthouse is a fun thing as a

00:14:43:13 – 00:14:45:10
Unknown
lawyer. I

00:14:45:15 – 00:14:48:21
Unknown
can tell you there’s a lot of orders that would disagree with you, right?

00:14:48:23 – 00:15:13:20
Unknown
But I think these people that are doing zoom hearings outside of an office setting, like in their cars and you mean. Yeah, it’s pretty wild to me and I so I was just at Scooter’s literally yesterday, and I was meeting with a friend for coffee, and all of a sudden you hear this man’s voice say, yes, Your Honor.

00:15:13:21 – 00:15:38:04
Unknown
Really? And we turned around and he’s on his laptop on a zoom hearing in scooters with a whole bunch of people around. It was like, shocking to me. Let me ask you your opinion on this, because I feel I am much more comfortable doing the zoom hearing if I do it at the office. There are times when I’ve had to do it from home because logistically, whatever.

00:15:38:04 – 00:16:03:06
Unknown
But I still make sure I’m dressed in something that I would wear to court, and I feel that many people don’t do that, especially men. And I think that’s wrong. I think you shouldn’t wear something to a zoom hearing you wouldn’t wear to court. Right. So they’re very they’re dressed very casually now. It’s not inappropriate clothing, but they’re wearing like a polo shirt, which you can’t wear that to court.

00:16:03:07 – 00:16:04:07
Unknown
Right. So

00:16:04:11 – 00:16:27:03
Unknown
we have at least one judge in our district that believes all men should wear ties in court, right? Well, and I do think, I mean, there is a dress code. Yeah. But again, wears don’t always read the rules. Have you seen the recent TikTok of the woman? She’s not a lawyer, but she’s a party in a case, and she’s on a zoom hearing, and she’s driving in her car, and it’s moving.

00:16:27:03 – 00:16:47:02
Unknown
You can see that she’s actually her car is moving, and it’s obvious she’s in the driver’s seat. And I think she’s appearing in court for some sort of driving violation that she’s not supposed to be driving. And so the judge says, ma’am, are you driving right now? And she goes, no, I’m a passenger in the car, and I have a driver.

00:16:47:02 – 00:17:02:06
Unknown
And he goes, what side of the car are you sitting on? And she said, the left side. Well, then how are you not driving? I’m sorry. I mean, the right side. I mean the right side. And so she’s completely lying. And then she says, let me tell my driver to pull over. So then she continues this whole thing.

00:17:02:08 – 00:17:05:19
Unknown
But, like, how dumb are you? Right?

00:17:05:21 – 00:17:26:01
Unknown
And I didn’t realize she was appearing for a driving thing. But I do remember seeing that he said, are you driving? And she doubled down on no many times. And then didn’t she go into the courtroom? And the judge was like, I’m not showing that you appeared for court. I didn’t see the end for that part.

00:17:26:02 – 00:17:49:00
Unknown
Well, I don’t think that was on video. Oh, that’s how it ended. Yeah. People are ridiculous. I have never been in a court hearing in my car, and I agree with you. I’m much more comfortable in my office going to a zoom hearing. I am uncomfortable doing zoom things at home because my dogs potentially will bark in the background.

00:17:49:02 – 00:18:08:04
Unknown
So. So I have this thing where when I’m on, like, even if I’m on speakerphone, my cat, one of my cats, goes crazy. Like if I do a zoom anything in the kitchen. She comes in like circles the laptop and like, starts howling.

00:18:08:06 – 00:18:14:16
Unknown
And she’ll do that if I’m on speakerphone, too. So I have to go in like I have an office at home and shut the door.

00:18:14:16 – 00:18:18:02
Unknown
And then she sits outside the door like howling. Does it sound

00:18:18:04 – 00:18:34:23
Unknown
like you have a kidnaped child? I have no idea. In the background. That’s what my cat sounds like. Yeah, so I can’t do hearings and are very long from home. Oh, I have to put her, like in the basement, probably, yeah. When my cats hungry, she sounds like a kidnaped child upstairs.

00:18:35:00 – 00:18:39:18
Unknown
Like feed me. They’re starving. Yeah. Yeah, always.

00:18:39:19 – 00:18:44:13
Unknown
Yeah. You never feed them, right?

00:18:44:15 – 00:18:45:00
Unknown
She’s so

00:18:45:00 – 00:19:09:15
Unknown
cute. Well, she’s not chubby anymore because she went on a diet. Because I stopped feeding her so much. I feel like she’s still bigger, though. Yeah, she’s definitely fluffy. You’re gonna get her if I die. But I’m not dying. Who’s gonna outlet? Who’s gonna die first? Probably the cats, I hope. Yeah. That’s morbid. So to what’s the set of morbid alive?

00:19:09:20 – 00:19:37:22
Unknown
I don’t know. Just being dead. I don’t know, lively Susans playing antonyms and synonyms today. So my vocabulary, though I really am. I think it’s a good idea. Oh, yeah. Not by learning new words, but by using them. Okay, so more growth of high. Well yeah, more changes with the court stuff. So technology definitely. I

00:19:37:23 – 00:19:41:12
Unknown
don’t love the lack of paper exhibits.

00:19:41:14 – 00:19:41:22
Unknown
I

00:19:42:01 – 00:19:49:12
Unknown
think it’s hard to navigate. Yeah. But I think I’ve done an evidentiary hearing but not an all day trial.

00:19:49:16 – 00:20:02:15
Unknown
I did an all day trial, and I actually went before I did it to the courthouse and had the court reporter show me how to do it, and we walked through how to do it, and I practiced, which I’m shocked more people don’t do.

00:20:02:16 – 00:20:27:22
Unknown
Yeah. And the day of the trial, the other attorney really struggled with it, and he was trying to be paperless with his exhibits. So when you’re connected to the system, anything that’s on your laptop is going to show to the whole courtroom. So he had like notes and things on his computer. You know, continuously plug and unplug the HDMI port.

00:20:27:23 – 00:20:53:15
Unknown
Oh, no. You know how much longer it took? Yeah. And then accidentally, many times, his notes would pop up. Wow. It was bad. Yeah, it was really bad. But I to I mean, I don’t think that’s uncommon that people use their laptop for their trial prep, right? So it’s like, do you have two laptops. That’s hard to I think that that would be that would have been better.

00:20:53:16 – 00:21:11:03
Unknown
Better. So you everyone needs two laptops. So you were a prepared lawyer. That’s amazing. Well and it was interesting because the court reporter I had a time with her and she was there. And then there was another attorney walking in and out and she said, what are you doing? And I told her and she said, I need to learn this too.

00:21:11:03 – 00:21:32:09
Unknown
I’m going to sit and watch. The reporter goes, nobody does this. Oh, wait, wait. Two women. Oh imagine that. And she was like, I haven’t had to do it yet. I want to see it in action. Thinking of being prepared. I’m shocked. Yeah, I just trial is so stressful. I’m being facetious. I know, do you love that word?

Because I love the word facetious. There. Expand your vocabulary. Yes. It’s spelled cool like to. I think it’s a.

00:21:43:20 – 00:21:54:21
Unknown
Might be wrong. We’ll look it up. You’re very good at spelling. I think it’s might just be f. Do you know my favorite? Do you know my favorite?

00:21:54:22 – 00:22:14:15
Unknown
Oh, it’s just a f face, ts. Okay. What’s your favorite thing? David knows. Do you don’t you don’t know your favorite word? Yeah. He’s going to type it in. Yeah. What? He doesn’t know how to spell it. What?

00:22:14:17 – 00:22:24:10
Unknown
It’s. But that’s not. That’s the. Yeah. Trotsky. Teco. TC.

00:22:24:12 – 00:22:31:22
Unknown
Trotsky. But look at how it’s spelled. It’s so cool. TKO, tcwc.

00:22:32:00 – 00:22:56:10
Unknown
I have a hat. This is Trotsky. Wait. Number two, a pretty girl or woman? Obviously a small object of this. Decorative rather than strictly functional, a trinket. That’s correct. But I’ve never heard of the definition as a pretty girl or woman. I just took my. I just took my job. I just look at my little Trotsky growing up.

00:22:56:11 – 00:23:02:18
Unknown
Use that in a sentence. My little trinket.

00:23:02:20 – 00:23:30:18
Unknown
I saw a video the other day of it. Must have been in like a record store or music store, and the two sets of employees were split into groups of like Millennials and Gen Z or Gen X, whatever. I don’t even know. And they were asking them to pronounce the names of the bands from like the 70s and 80s, early 90s that were very weird and it was hilarious, like In Excess and Siouxsie and the Banshees and Depeche Mode.

00:23:30:20 – 00:23:40:18
Unknown
So that was fun because words don’t. We don’t pronounce words the way they look, right? Right. Facetious.

00:23:40:20 – 00:23:50:11
Unknown
Okay, so, so two women coming to the courthouse being prepared. Yeah. That totally tracks.

00:23:50:13 – 00:24:19:13
Unknown
Oh my gosh. So in the last three years. Another thing that has changed a lot or become more of everyday life is like the TikTok. And now ChatGPT and Facebook’s and getting advice on Facebook pages. Yeah, I think a lot of people well, on our old podcast, remember, we’re not old. In our previous podcast sessions we would do the Google.

00:24:19:14 – 00:24:44:12
Unknown
Yeah. And we didn’t do legal advice. But back then it was Google was the legal advice. But now it’s way bigger than you. Yeah. And I think, you know, the bad advice and don’t even call it legal advice, but the bad advice that people are getting online is so bad. And I think what we’re seeing now is starting to see the need to fix those things that people have been doing in the last couple of years.

00:24:44:17 – 00:25:10:08
Unknown
And the scary thing will be that they’re often will be times that we can’t fix it. They’ve used ChatGPT to write some court order and it’s now set in stone. But I think the Facebook groups to that we see and people are constantly asking for medical advice and people are just giving it to them, and they’re asking for legal advice and people are giving it to them.

00:25:10:10 – 00:25:33:06
Unknown
It’s so wrong. It’s so wrong. And, you know, there’s the part of us that we want to go in and say, you’re wrong, but you just sort of let it, like, go by the wayside. One that I see wrong in the Facebook group since legal advice that sometimes I have gone in and been like, that’s not right, is the one where people think that they can just cut off their other parent.

00:25:33:06 – 00:25:55:23
Unknown
And it’s it’s usually a mom that wants to cut off the dad, like terminate his rights. And they get all the wrong advice. And I think that that is such a momentous type of legal issue that you can’t you can’t just do it right. You want to. Right? Yeah. There’s very few legal things you can do just because you want to.

00:25:56:00 – 00:26:24:18
Unknown
I think what’s interesting and for listeners who have been here with us, we constantly compare the legal practice to the medical practice. Right. That you come into our office. We’re not we may not have the answer right away, just like a doctor doesn’t have an answer right away, that to do an x ray or something. And people will go into these comments on Facebook and say to a question about medical advice and they’ll say, just go see a doctor.

00:26:24:18 – 00:26:44:18
Unknown
And I’m like, yeah, but then they don’t do that. On the legal advice ones, they’re like, here’s what happened with me. And this is obviously going to be the same for you. And they very rarely are people saying, go talk to a lawyer. Right. Well, and I think a lot of times there’s the emotion of whatever brought them to their legal issue.

00:26:44:19 – 00:27:05:05
Unknown
And then people come in there and they like, they like glom on to that and they pile on like, oh, I’m so sorry. You have a, you know, a deadbeat ex, right? And and like, yeah, you should just terminate his. Right. Right. Have your new husband of two months just adopt your children. Right. Because you can just magically do that.

00:27:05:06 – 00:27:29:03
Unknown
Well, and so many of these people don’t even know that that has to happen, right? You can’t just write off. Yeah, just that could be a whole podcast in and of itself. Yeah. Okay. Write it down. What to do on Google. But but the, the, the AI thing is a huge problem. Yes. And it’s not even because it’s bad advice.

00:27:29:08 – 00:27:49:21
Unknown
You know, like bad advice is, you know, should you sell the house before or after the marriage and someone just says, well, in every case it’s, you know, after the divorce or whatever, like, that’s bad legal advice, right? Because it depends on what the situation. But like AI is giving people like, completely wrong information in a confident way.

00:27:49:22 – 00:28:18:11
Unknown
Yeah, that’s the problem. Well, yeah, people trust it just completely outright. Yeah. Without checking or and I think the way it communicates to you is like it makes you feel like it’s good advice, right, in a confident way or whatever. So I have a case recently where the other party was not represented by an attorney, and I got a final decree in the case because they never answered.

00:28:18:11 – 00:28:45:10
Unknown
They didn’t show up for the final hearing. All of that. Right then they tried to undo the decree and and I was really surprised. I haven’t seen one of these in a long time, but it was like drafted by an online legal service. And it looked really AI esque. But there was a name that said drafted by like Joe Schmo at Legal Answers Online or something like that that got filed like that.

00:28:45:11 – 00:29:09:20
Unknown
And I’m like, what? What’s this? It’s like an online legal service. I mean, those are still around too. Yeah. And they’re probably getting better than they used to be. But and people are or those companies are still charging for those. So I think people are using them less because they’re like, well, you can use ChatGPT for free. And it’s yeah, it’s pretty scary.

00:29:09:22 – 00:29:30:08
Unknown
Then there’s all those other issues of like, someone else writing your legal documents. Yes. Not okay either. So a whole episode or five about AI. We can talk about that too. And like really, I think white people should be really cautious about using it to or I suppose, get a second opinion by a lawyer if you’re going to start the process.

00:29:30:10 – 00:29:52:13
Unknown
Legal advice watch out. Don’t put personal private information that you wouldn’t want spread around the whole world into an AI platform, right? You would think that’s common knowledge, but it’s not. I wonder what would happen. Have you ever tried this? Hey, ChatGPT, what do you know about. And then put your name in? Yes. Oh, yeah, I’ve done it.

00:29:52:15 – 00:30:12:10
Unknown
Yeah, well, hold the internet stuff. Yeah, for the most part. And there’s another one that I attended a lunch about that specifically will do that about you. That’s similar to ChatGPT, but it does pull everything off Google. And you and I have a lot of stuff about us on Google. So I wonder if you were like, okay, thanks.

00:30:12:10 – 00:30:35:15
Unknown
That’s all the professional stuff. But what about the personal? Give me some. Oh, let’s do it. Okay. Not right now. And another episode. No. That’s scary. You have to edit it out. Don’t like it? I mean, we’re not really live. We’re not live. Live, right? Live but not live. Not morbid. Okay, so Tracy’s good at keeping us on track.

00:30:35:16 – 00:30:42:19
Unknown
Yeah. Tracy, did you like segment five? I know he’s scroll down to closing. He’s like, get to the point here, girls.

00:30:42:23 – 00:31:00:13
Unknown
Yeah. So we have another person in the room with us. That’s David. That’s new. And growth from our last. Yeah. On the podcast last time we had like a part time, three quarter time marketing director who was helping us with our podcast.

00:31:00:13 – 00:31:24:17
Unknown
And when she left, we decided we wanted a full time employee to do marketing and all of that fun stuff. So we have David doing that, running the camera, running the sound board, the laptop, the lights, looking up things on Google as we’re talking, telling us to keep going. Yeah. So if you hear random giggles in the background, that’s David.

00:31:24:21 – 00:31:47:14
Unknown
David okay, so we’re back. You know, it’s been a while. We I’m really excited about the podcast. I think we had a lot of discussions about like should we bring it back? And obviously it was really great and easy to think about. The logistics were easy because we’re going to just walk up to the second floor and do the podcast.

00:31:47:14 – 00:32:24:10
Unknown
But we also have always talked about like, do we have enough stuff to talk about who’s going to be on it? And I think all of our lawyers at this point are comfortable talking and being on camera, and that’s really great. So in this podcast series, as we come back on, we’re going to have a lot more of our attorneys talking about different areas of the law and their different experiences, because every one of us has different experiences in our practice and levels of experience to, like you and I have been around forever and you more than me just getting.

00:32:24:12 – 00:32:55:13
Unknown
I think it’s true. Well, yeah, more than you. She’s way more experienced than me, but five years this year. But we also have, you know, some younger lawyers in our office who are very knowledgeable, very capable, but also come from a different experience level. And I think their insight is really interesting to what I think about the things that they are doing with their cases, with the level of experience, I never would have been able to do what they’re doing.

00:32:55:15 – 00:33:19:23
Unknown
You know, with only two, three, 4 or 5 years out of law school. So it’s I’m really impressed with. Yeah. They’re badasses. Yeah. Well, and I think also it comes from a place of the amount of support they have here too, that I think they’re pretty confident walking into court and thinking, oh, well, someone helped me prepare this, so I’m going to do it well.

00:33:20:00 – 00:33:43:06
Unknown
And they’re there in an environment that is growth minded versus like what we hear about other law firms that everyone is very, you know, just for themselves. Yeah. So no one here keeps their cases away from other people because they don’t want them to know about it or learn about it or benefit from it in some way. Yeah.

00:33:43:09 – 00:34:14:17
Unknown
So okay. So what are you excited about looking forward on this podcast? Like, why should people keep listening to us? Because we’re great. They’re going to get some free legal advice in a fun way. They might learn something new. I think we are going to try to keep things fun about maybe talking about some current events. There’s always crazy cases that we’ve decided we want to talk about, like Brittany for Brittany.

00:34:14:18 – 00:34:39:17
Unknown
That was a good one. I know she she’s free now. She is free. She’s free. You know, there’s celebrity things that come up that are fun to talk about. You know, and we’ll talk about certain specific areas of the law. Two, that either need to be touched on, again, you know, like changes or reviews. We also will we’re going to we’ll stay pretty local but talk about these good celebrity things.

00:34:39:17 – 00:35:03:21
Unknown
But I like to pull things from what we see on social media and the questions that people are asking. So we’ll talk about those things. If you have questions as our listeners that you want us to answer, please submit those. Let us know. No matter how while it is, you can be anonymous if you want. We’re not going to say your name, so give us those topics or questions that you want to hear.

00:35:04:01 – 00:35:24:13
Unknown
Otherwise, we’re just going to do whatever we think you want to hear. So it was funny. I got a text message one time from my brother out of nowhere, and he said, I just listened to your podcast about pet custody. And I said, really? I said, are you listening to the podcast in general? And he goes, no, just that one.

00:35:24:15 – 00:35:47:09
Unknown
But I’ve gotten that one from a lot of people. Yeah, yeah. And he has pets, so maybe it meant something to him to I don’t think he’s breaking up with the storm anytime soon, but people are interested. Pet custody is very important in divorce. Yes. Yeah, we could touch on that one again. Yeah. Okay. Cases out there on pet custody.

00:35:47:11 – 00:36:24:16
Unknown
We have good cases in our office about pet custody. Comes up more than people think. Yeah, so we’ll do another updated podcast about pet custody. You don’t have to go back, you know, five years ago and find our pet custody episode. We’ll do another one. So you’re not going to want to miss our upcoming episodes. We promise. Still be interesting and fun, and we’ll have some surprise guests also in the future that from our community, our legal community, outside the legal community, to come as sort of an expert on different topics, probably not IRS things because that’s boring.

00:36:24:18 – 00:36:47:03
Unknown
But maybe business valuations, we do that a lot. Yeah. So if there’s anyone that wants to be a guest or you have ideas about a guest, also let us know. But I think in the meantime, as we close out our very first episode of the comeback series back, what is it? Reboot. Yeah, reboot. We’re making all of this up right now.

00:36:47:05 – 00:36:51:20
Unknown
Come back. Reboot. I think the glow up. Yeah.

00:36:51:22 – 00:37:03:20
Unknown
